Competitions

In order to add some extra interest to our regular playing sessions and give all of our members an incentive to improve their ability, we run competitions throughout the year to give everyone in the society a chance to play some competitive table football on a regular basis without having to travel outside of the university.

The League

We usually run two leagues in a year, each lasting a number of weeks. Points for the league are based on the results of the regular group playing sessions every Thursday. You get points for the number of matches you win and the number of goals scored. Since partners in the GPS are selected and are different each time, each person gains an individual score in the overall league. We try to structure the league so it rewards improvement at least as much as experience. While some commitment is required to improve rapidly, we also have the league set up so that you can miss a few sessions without having a significant negative impact on your score.

Singles Competition

The singles competition was introduced to counter the lack of singles games played in the society, and also to give another way for members to get to know each other. We now run two singles competitions throughout the year (one after the other), each in a 'double elimination' format. This is basically a knockout format in which if you lose once you stay in the competition (and can potentially still win), and are only knocked-out after losing twice. Each competition is co-ordinated by the exec to keep the competition running smoothly, but competitors are expected to contact each other to arrange times to play matches. People often choose to play their matches during the weekly group playing sessions, but this is by no means necessary and we encourage players to arrange their matches for times throughout the week.
