Review coming soon...
Despite all the trains being cancelled, we managed to find our way to Oxford for the first Open in two years. And in the end we were glad we made it, especially Tom Burdett who finally won a trophy that he won't leave at the venue - First Place in Open Singles! Warwick now has two players who have won OS, as well as two who've won Open Doubles - there really is no bigger uni for foosball in the UK. Other trophy winners include Steve, who came 2nd in OD and 3rd in Masters' Doubles with Tom; Luke and Chris, who placed in both the semi-pro doubles events (2nd and 3rd in NPD and SPD respectively); and Dan T who came 3rd in Amateur Doubles with Tom Keevill. It was a very smoothly run tournament, and a welcome return of one of UK foos's most regular events. Check out the full results here.
In association with the Holywell Pub and its players, we're proud to announce the second Holywell Open! This one will be bigger and better than the last: it's now a 2 day tournament with more events and longer formats than before. It's also the first UK tournament to use the new flat-rate entry fee system for open events - with discounts for newer players to ensure a fair fee for everyone. Open and women's events are mostly on Saturday 23rd and banded events are on Sunday 24th - so it's almost like two 1-day tournaments, meaning that you don't miss out too much if you turn up for only one day. Check the full announcement on our forum for full details of price and timings.
Congratulations to Alex Brenig-Jones, winner of the January Freshers' Tournament! Dan Merzon came 2nd with Steve Brown 3rd, after some of the closest and most tense games the society has ever witnessed. See the discussion on our forum, or go straight to the full results and photos. Thanks to everyone who came, and if you've caught the foos bug you can find us on Thursday evenings at 6pm in the graduate, or alternatively come along during weekday lunchtimes or early afternoons where addicts can often be found having informal games.
To add to the Christmas festivities that began with last week's BFA tour event, we can now confirm details of the end of term tournament. It's a 2-ball rollerball drinking tourney! This is standard doubles rollerball but with points awarded for drinking, so expect some disorderly behaviour and impaired foosball skills. There are plenty of festive prizes to be won, including prizes for the winners, best freshers and best non-drinking team. It's known for being a very open tournament and last year was won by a fresher team, so it's well worth entering. More details here.
The first few weeks of 2007/08 could hardly have been more hectic for Warwick Table Football. We relocated to the Graduate Bar in the Union, and moved in a Tornado alongside the Garlando to officially became a multi-table society for the first time in our history. We've held our first four league sessions, and our first tournament in the new venue of the Holywell Pub in Hinckley. Not only that, but three Warwick players took home first-place trophies in the Open Events. Still to come in Term 1, we've got a tournament in Manchester, the return of the BFA Sanctioned Tour and a super-secret end of term tournament. Have a look at the calendar for more details.
Only a few weeks into term, and we've already got busy organising our first national tournament of the year. We can confirm that the first ever Holywell Open is taking place on November 3rd in the Holywell Pub in Hinckley. It's being run by your favourite people right here at Warwickfoos, so you can expect the usual great value - there are plenty of events, novices get cheap entry and there's a £5 table fee discount for first-time tournament goers. In fact, it's the perfect tourney to introduce you to the world of national table football, and a great way to kickstart the new academic year. You can pre-reg for the tournament here. Got any questions or need a doubles partner? Ask on the forum.
It's been a hectic first few weeks here at warwickfoos towers. Firstly congratulations to Chris Lyall & Andreas Macek, winners of this year's Freshers' doubles tournament, and again to Chris Lyall who also won the singles tournament! See the full results for a complete summary. We had our first league session on Thursday, where Tom Burdett took first place, and you can see the league standings here. After the session we headed over to Varsity for the first social of the year which involved some predictably questionable antics. We'll also be taking signups for the singles ladder at the coming Thursday evening session (25th October) - more details to follow. We have also recently installed a 'Tornado' table in the Graduate, which can be found two floors up in Union South; society members can regularly be found playing there, so come up and visit!
Welcome to another year of Warwick Table Football! As the biggest and best table football society in the country, we're looking forward to another year crammed with tournaments, socials, and a constant frenzy of foosball fun. Already we have plans for the Freshers' Tournament in the first few weeks of term, with a large prize fund. This tournament is free to enter for all new members of the society, so don't miss it! Look out for us in the Union marketplace at the Societies' Fair on the first Thursday of term, and join us in the bar in the Rootes Social building from 6pm on Thursday evening where we'll be having our first weekly session of informal table football. Freshers and veterans alike are all welcome, so we'll see you there!
As if the Warwick Open wasn't enough competitive foos for you, we've just confirmed that there will be another tournament at Warwick this term: the first Woxford Open! This is a one-day tournament on Saturday June 23rd, running instead of the Oxford Open which isn't taking place this year. It'll run on seven tables in the Rootes bar, and will include Open Singles and Doubles, Women's Singles and No-Pro Doubles. No-Pro Doubles is in a Swiss format, meaning that you're guaranteed to get lots of games no matter how well you do - and as always, there will be trophies and prize money in every event, so there are plenty of reasons why you should enter. As if that wasn't enough, it's also a BFA ranking tournament, so it's another vital chance to improve your national table football ranking and get ahead of everyone else. The entry fee starts from £10 for novices - and once again, there is no table fee for first-time tournament goers. Pre-registration is now open - register as early as you can to avoid missing out. All the details can be found on the Britfoos announcement.
We are all very excited here at warwickfoos towers because we've just finalised the details for this year's Warwick Open. If you haven't been to one before then prepare to be amazed. The first Warwick Open had over 130 players, thirteen tables, and over £1200 prize money. The second Warwick Open, last year, had sixteen tables, more events and over £2000 prize money: It was the largest national table football event last year and we're pretty sure it was the largest one-day national table football tournament ever. Amongst are entrants were the world number two (UK number one Rob Atha) as well as players from as far afield as Norway. This year we're going even bigger again, with events on both the Saturday and Sunday (plus the now legendary warm-up friendly event on the Friday). We will have at least seventeen tables and are expected a prizefund of at least £3000. It will be an ITSF-sanctioned (International Table Soccer Federation) Master Series event, attracting some of the best players in the world. Not only do you get to play against players of such awesome calibre (which is something you'd normally have to travel abroad for), but we also have Novice, Amateur and Semi-Pro events where players of any standard can compete with each other for trophies and prize money. This year we'll be awarding prize money further down the table (up to the top 32 players in some events) to give everyone a fair shot at the prize fund. You cannot afford to miss this event. For more information, see the new Warwick Open page.
If your new year's resolution is to play loads of national-level foos then you're in luck. There are two tournaments coming up this term as well as the next season of the National League. We're entering an incredible four teams in the league this year, so there should be more opportunity than ever for people to represent the university at table football. The current squad list is now online. With the new year comes a rankings update as the year's results are collated and points from old events are weighted down or discounted completely. This means that many of our players have moved up in the national Garlando rankings, with our top player now ranked 8th in the country. If you fancy getting on those ranking lists yourself (or improving your position) you'll have the opportunity to do so at the upcoming national tournaments. See the national events page for the latest rankings of our players and a list of upcoming events.
We've kicked off the year with the most spectacular set of events we've ever had. The Freshers Tournament was a roaring success (see results and photos), which we pretty much repeated again only a week later with the open tournament (more results and photos). That was followed up by our first social of term, during which we took over the King Baba's restaurant in Leamington before heading on to explore the many bars the fine town has to offer. Our best forensic team are still piecing together what happened and we should have some photos and videos for you very soon. In the midst of all of this, we've been holding our weekly sessions, which are more popular than ever and running fantastically under our new system. The first league for this year kicked off last Thursday. Don't worry if you missed the start of the league, you can join it at any time just by turning up in the bar on a Thursday evening. Finally, we'll be starting the singles competition very shortly, just as soon as we've finished sorting out entries. It doesn't cost anything and every member of the society is welcome to enter. If you haven't signed up yet email us ASAP to put your name down.
Our first group playing session on Thursday was a great success, with 35 people turning out to play. The new system worked very well too, and we're
already planning cool new ideas to implement over the coming weeks to make it run even better. A league and a singles competition will kick off
shortly into term, but before then we have not one, but two doubles tournaments for you. We have a total of £400 in cash prizes to give away
and entry is free for members of the society. For a non-member to attend both tournaments would cost £5.00, whereas joining the society (for
£2.50) will get you free entry to both events, as well as reduced or free entry to all of our other tournaments throughout the year! See the
Tournaments page for more information.
We saw a lot of new people at the societies fair today and it looks like this is going to be a good year for us all. We'll be holding a tournament
just for our freshers and completely new members in the next few weeks (we're just waiting for confirmation on the date from the bar management).
It will be announced soon with more details, but we have already set aside £400 in cash prizes for our tournaments this month. The Student's Union site
is having problems at the moment, which some of those trying to join the society online might have encountered. I'm afraid there's nothing we
can do about this, but do keep trying over the next few days. Everybody is very welcome to our first session tomorrow, that's Thursday,
from 6:00pm in 'the bar' (Rootes Social Building) whether or not you have managed to join up yet. So if you're having problems joining or would
like a taster session first (or if you missed us at the societies fair today), make sure you come along to the bar tomorrow evening, anytime after
six.
The Table Football Society, or 'warwickfoos' as we're also calling ourselves now, have been working harder than ever over the summer break to make this the best society on campus. It's not just a new name and a new website; we've been considering every event we run from every possible angle to make improvements right across the board. The league, tournaments and socials are all set to be dramatically revamped this year to make we sure cater to everyone, from those who enjoy the occasional drunken knock-about on the local pub football table, to those who want to play competitively in national events.
We have lots of new ideas that we are really excited about putting into action, and we can't wait for our members (new and old) to get
involved in what's coming up this year. Now is also the perfect time to give us your feedback. We'd love to hear your opinion on what
we've done in the past and get your input on how we run the society this year. If you have any comments please don't hesitate to email us, or have your say on the forum, where you might also
find a sneak preview or two of what's coming up this year.
We're proud to unveil our new website. It's had a complete redesign and most of the content has been re-written too. We've been aiming to
make the site friendlier and all the information that's on it easier to find. We're still in beta at the moment, which means there are a
few more changes to come. The site's been thoroughly tested, but if you find anything that's broken, or have any suggestions for improvement,
please email us or leave feedback on the forum.
The society's teams in the British
Foosball Association's national league have both made it through the group stages and into the semi-finals. Warwick A will be
playing local veterans The Chetwynd, while Warwick B take on Bristol's finest. Matches resume at the end of September.
The second league and second singles competition for this academic year have been rounded up, with Tom Burdett
taking first place in both after a close final against Tom Hampson in the singles competition and a seven point lead in the league
ahead of Andrew Nubbert, who also came third in singles. Dan Kingston took the bronze in the league, his last competition as a Warwick
student.
This year's Warwick Open was a resounding success. With sixteen tables, over 130 competitors and a prize fund of over £2000,
it was a spectacular event. After the standard set by the first Warwick Open the year before, expectations were high, but this
year's Open has been even more highly praised by those who attended. In addition to running a successful tournament, the society
also showed the strength of its player base, with strong results in all events, including all-Warwick finals in both Amateur
Doubles and Semi-Pro doubles. For more information see the national events page and the extensive
photo gallery.
